Early antique sterling silver coffee pot by Benjamin Preston 1844.
Sectional bulbous in form sterling silver coffee pot, eight curved sections make up this silver coffee pot profile. Six sections have been finely chased and engraved with elaborate and intricate detailed patterning. Each panel has a chased and engraved central feature with complementing decoration around the perimeter below the lid lip. Four of the six panels have a beautiful central panel with raised flora and fauna. Both the central side panels have a cartouche, one with lion crest, the other with a floral engraved form.
The spout and handle have been sympathetically engraved to bind all elements of the coffee pot. The lid features five scrolls with ornate hinge and flower bud finial, engraved detail runs around the perimeter edge. The base of the coffee pot simulates the lid perimeter with scroll feet and adjoining swags. The coffee pot handle is connected to the body via two ornate ferrules with ivory insulators. Both the inside of the lid and the top of the handle are hallmarked along with the base showing a full set of London assay marks.
The coffee pot lid has the lightest of play, seats well in rebate surrounds. The handle is tight in ferrules with retaining pins all secure. The chased decoration is good, some light rubbing as expected. Surface marks representative of age with a couple of small indents to sectional corners, about 5mm in length, of little detriment to the piece. The coffee pot sits flat and level. The assay marks slightly rubbed, all good definition and legible.
